This year didn’t pan out the way any of us planned to say the least! Most of us had to postpone any travel plans we had. Instead of traveling overseas, we adventured close to home and maybe even got around to a couple of house projects that we were always putting off.
One thing this year really installed in us is the appreciation we have for traveling around the world and immersing ourselves in different cultures. Most people around the world rely on tourism as their main source of income. It’s more important than ever to thoughtfully travel and put your money into local communities all around the world.
Now that countries are starting to re-open for travelers, it’s a great time to start thinking about 2021 travel plans. We could all use something to look forward to, right? Whether you’re wanting to venture to a more remote destination, relax on an exotic beach somewhere, or go on a staycation closer to home, here are our top travel destinations of 2021!
21. IRELAND
The Emerald Isle, or Ireland, is known for its rolling green hills, rugged coastlines, and breathtaking scenery. From incredible sights such as the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, Slea Head, and more, it’s a destination that needs to be on everyone’s bucket list!
This country is the perfect blend of old and new traditions. Grab a beer in some of the oldest pubs in the world, visit historical sites like the Blarney Castle, and explore it’s evolving foodie scene. Ireland is also a haven for adventure and nature lovers, including cyclists, hikers, and even surfers.
Ireland is currently open to US citizens but not without self-isolation for 14 days upon arrival (as of September 20, 2020). 17. PAPUA NEW GUINEA
The eastern half of the second largest island on earth, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is an immensely biologically and culturally diverse nation in the southwestern Pacific. Though known for its famous surfing, bird watching, fishing, and trekking, the most fascinating aspect of this remote nation is truly held in its people. In the remote villages, visitors will discover countless native tribes that passionately maintain their historical traditions through art, initiations, and festivals.
One such tribe is known as the Mudmen. According to legend, the Asaro tribe of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea was once defeated in battle by a fierce enemy tribe. Forced to flee for their lives into the Asaro River, the tribe waited until it was safe to return to their native homes. At dusk, they slowly rose from the muddy river banks and returned to see what was left of their village. The enemy, seeing them rise from the river covered in dried clay, believed them to be evil spirits, and they fled in fear of their ghost-like appearances.
Realizing this new power, the elders of the Asaro tribe cunningly decided to create a new battle dress code: warriors were to cover themselves from head to toe in dried clay from the Asaro river and create elaborate masks with scary features, using pigs teeth and tusks to accentuate ghoulish features. Because of these famous battle costumers, the tribe soon came to be known as the “Mudmen,” a name that tribal members still claim proudly to this day.
And that is only one of the many tribes that inhabit PNG!
Take a special trip to this remote island country in order to experience one of the most iconic festivals of the entire South Pacific: a Sing Sing. A Sing Sing provides the opportunity for visitors to witness tribal traditions in an explosion of color and sound. On Independence Day (September 16), over 100 tribes across Papua New Guinea gather at Goroka in the Eastern Highlands for a celebration of their cultural diversity. Only a couple of hundred foreigners attended this spectacular and unique event, and we think you should be one of them!
16. CUBA
Located less than 500 miles off the coast of Florida, Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean. This fascinating island country, with its complicated history and relationship to the United States, should not be overlooked by tourists, even those from the States (hint: check out this article for up-to-date information on traveling to Cuba). Cuba is dotted with lovely sugar-white beaches, while the famous capital of Havana is lined with pastel-colored houses, old Spanish architecture, vintage cars, and fun salsa music.

If you’re looking an adventure that’s a little closer to home, USA national parks are the way to go! With so many different parks across the country, that hardest decision will be what one to visit first. You’ll spend your days exploring, hiking, swimming, and maybe even spotting wildlife from afar if you’re lucky. The evenings are filled the most beautiful sunsets that turn into the most magical night skies that truly shine brightly!

3. INDONESIA
Though Indonesia’s most famous site of Bali is legendary for its beauty, temples, and spirituality, Indonesia is actually composed of thousands of volcanic islands. A Southeast Asian nation, Indonesia is home to hundreds of ethnic groups, several languages and cultures, and numerous beautiful beaches, volcanos, and jungles. This sprawling country is popularly known for its Buddhist traditions and pristine nature that shelters numerous wild animals, including elephants, orangutans, and tigers.

1. TURKEY (and the Balkans)

Straddling two different continents, Europe and Asia, Turkey is a true haven for multiculturalism, with connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Home to roughly 80 million people, Turkey contains a vast array of historical landmarks, archaeological excavation sites, medieval architecture of soaring domes and dazzling mosaics. This area of the world is dotted with charming, multicultural villages and cities, amazing coastlines, impressive architecture, and rich (though often turbulent) history. This area of the world receives much fewer visitors than Western Europe (and is much cheaper, too!), but its pristine nature and uncrowded sites rival even the most beautiful parts of the West.
