Itinerary | 7 Days
Day 1: Arrive in Iceland and take an optional dip in the famous Blue Lagoon before heading into the city of Reykjavik. The lagoon’s unique geothermal water composition features three active ingredients—silica, algae, and minerals—leaving your skin silky smooth. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is the country’s largest city, but that doesn’t mean much here; the city is small enough to explore within a day. Highlights include the country’s first lighthouse, grabbing lunch at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, which literally translates to “the best hotdog in town,” and Hallgrímskirkja—Iceland’s largest church. Enjoy a toasty evening under the stars at one of the many national hot springs. Accommodation: Reykjavik Hotel or similar
Day 2: After an early buffet breakfast, head out on a journey through the Golden Circle—an area teeming with Iceland’s must-see spots, from natural beauty to places of historical and cultural significance. You’ll gaze upon the geysers at Haukadalur and Strokkur, the Gullfoss and Háifoss waterfalls, Kerid Crater, and many more breathtaking sights along our journey! These locations are among the country’s most famous and offer unbelievable photo opportunities sure to make friends and family jealous. You’ll end the evening at Halldorskaffi Restaurant for an Icelandic take on pizza and burgers. If you have the time and energy after dinner, hike to the Seljavallalaug pool for some night swimming. This picturesque, man-made hot pool is surrounded by mountains and lauded for its incredible health benefits. Accommodation: Volcano Hotel or similar
Day 3: Start the day right with a hearty breakfast before standing in awe of the otherworldly Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. The splendor of the falls, which reach 200 feet each, is hard to comprehend, yet the day of beauty has only just begun. You’ll travel to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, lined with staggering basalt columns, the former island Dyrhólaey, and the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreckage. In 1973, a U.S. Naval plane ran out of fuel, crashing among the black sand, where the remains can still be found today. Other highlights include the Sólheimajökull glacier, a hike through the Fjadrárglijúfur Canyon, and Jökulsárlón lagoon. After sunset, head back to the hotel for a cozy evening and robust dinner. Accommodation: Hali Country Hotel or similar
Day 4: You’ll begin the day traveling by car through the East Fjords. As you pass by little towns, such as Djúpivogur and Egilsstadir, you’ll get a taste of what local life in Iceland is truly like. Savor traditional food and alluring sights as you continue your journey through the East Fjords. As you continue onwards, you’ll pass through the barren wasteland of Mödrudalsöraefi. In this area of isolation, the only view is mountains rising on the horizon. Eventually the path will lead to one of Iceland’s ultimate destinations—Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. In the evening, unwind with a soak in the electric blue Myvatn Nature Baths. Accommodation: Secluded Cottage
Day 5: Fuel up with an early breakfast before venturing out on the nature reserve surrounding Lake Myvatn. Hike through lava formations, underground baths, and craters. Continue on through the Reykjadalur Valley to the ethereal Godafoss Waterfall, known as the Waterfall of the Gods and one of the most magical places in all of Iceland. Spend the afternoon warming up at a local coffee shop, with some traditional Icelandic sweets. By nightfall you’ll reach Eyjafjördur in Akureyri—your next destination and Iceland's second largest city. Accommodation: Akureyri Hotel
Day 6: This morning, it’s straight to the sea to explore Eyjafjördur even further. You’ll find an abundance of diverse marine life, including a large population of humpback whales. Afterwards, you’ll travel through many small villages, including Hvammstangi—one of the best places for seal watching. As you venture further into the Western Fjords, you’ll be treated to even more stunning views; and if the weather allows it, you may even catch a glimpse of the magical northern lights. Accommodation: Reykir Village Hotel
Day 7: Wake up early to bask in the mystical sunrise over the Borgarfjördur area—a location popular with photographers due to its impressive hot springs and waterfalls, such as Hraunfossar and Barnafossar. You’ll have the opportunity to hike to the mountain’s peak before heading to the sea cliffs and strolling through the sleepy coastal villages famous for their geology, trade history, geography and wildlife. Take one last look at Hvalfjördur Fjord before traveling back Reykjavik and preparing for your flight home late in the evening / or the next day.
