After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we will start our busy day full of adventure! Our first stop is Corcovado. Corcovado is among the 'musts' of any visit to Rio. The 2,326-foot (709-meter) humpbacked Corcovado is famous for the majestic statue of Christ the Redeemer located at the top. The Corcovado Hill, together with D. Martha Belvedere, is a mandatory stop in Rio for the beauty of the sightseeing from both locations. From the Corcovado, we can see the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon, as well as the Rodrigo Freitas Lagoon and the Botanical Garden. From the D. Marta belvedere, the main attractions are the Maracana stadium, Guanabara Bay, and the Sugar Loaf.

After a delicious lunch, you will have the rest of the afternoon to explore on your own, or you can add on a visit to Tijuca Forest. Walk in a forest trail up to the Cascatinha Falls and take in the breathtaking views. We will return to the hotel and have the remainder of the day to explore.

Day 3: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

We will embark on an exciting day exploring more of Rio De Janeiro. Today we will be picked up from our hotel to enjoy the other side of wonderful Rio. The tour begins with a city panoramic view through downtown Rio, passing by the Sambadrome and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Get to know the traditional Cinelândia square with historical buildings, the Municipal Theater, the National Library, and the National Museum of Fine Arts. By taking the Aterro do Flamengo, we will be taken to the neighborhood of Urca where the Sugar Loaf is located, one of the largest symbols of the city.

We will spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure, soaking in the sun's rays at the beach or relaxing poolside at the hotel.

After breakfast, we will depart on a full-day tour to the Argentine side of the Iguazu Falls, where we will have intimate views of this unforgettable section of the Iguazu River. An experienced guide will show us the hidden gems of this unique national park and will take us off the beaten path to show us the best views.

Enjoy free time in the afternoon to take a boat ride out to truly experience the falls or continue exploring the many trails. This day will be a real adventure, full of thrills and spills, and is an absolute must for the adventurer at heart.

After breakfast, we will depart on a tour of the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls, where we will enjoy vast panoramic views and take in the Falls in their entirety.

Welcome to Paraguay, a landlocked country that is filled with miles of subtropical forests and houses some of the richest wildlife that the rainforests have to offer. You’ll start off your stay in Paraguay’s capital: Asunción.

Upon arrival in Asunción, you will continue through customs and immigrations where you will obtain a “visa en arribo” (visa on arrival). You will then transfer to your accommodation for check in, spending the remainder of the evening exploring the city at your leisure and enjoying a delicious dinner at the hostel or at a local restaurant.

After breakfast, we will embark on a city tour of Asunción. The tour starts in old downtown, where you will visit Casa de la Independencia, the house where Independence was announced. We will also visit the Cathedral, as well as the train station (not in function), which is one of the oldest in all of South America. Next, we will visit the national Panteón and have the chance to try one of the typical Paraguayan dishes.

After lunch, we will head back to the hostel, where you can relax or explore the city at your leisure.

After breakfast, we will be picked up by our driver and guide for a tour into nature to see the amazing bird species of Paraguay. Just a few minutes from Asunción, we will be surrounded by nature, with palm savannas, grasslands, marshlands and shruby ecosystems of the Humid Chaco.

After our tour, we will drive back to the hostel for the day. You may spend the afternoon exploring Asunción on your own, or you can choose to attend a traditional cooking class and learn all the flavors of Paraguay.

Today, we will explore Punta del Este. You will be picked up at the hostel and brought to this gorgeous seaside city. On the way, we will visit Piriapolis and stop at the promenade facing the iconic Hotel Argentino. We will then travel to Cerro San Antonio, where we can get a beautiful view of the city. Next, we will head to Casapueblo before heading to our final destination, Punta del Este.

After lunch, we will visit the neighborhoods of Beverly Hills, San Rafael, Cantegril, and Golf, as well as the undulating bridge of La Barra de Maldonado, Brava and Mansa beaches, the La Mano Monument, and the main city center. After a full day of exploring, we will head back to Montevideo for the evening, where you can explore the city at your leisure.

This morning, we will get acquainted with Montevideo’s architectural landmarks, neighborhoods, and coastal views on an insightful three-hour guided tour of the capital. We will drive to Independence Plaza (Plaza Independencia), which divides Montevideo’s Old Town and downtown. Our guide will point out the monument to José Artigas, Uruguay's great military leader and national hero, and will lead you on a walk around the plaza. Admire the Italian Gothic–style architecture of the Palacio Salvo (Palacio Legislativo), whose 26 stories once made it South America's tallest building. We'll view Puerta de la Ciudadela, one of the few remaining parts of the city wall that once surrounded colonial Montevideo. Back aboard the bus, we'll head to the barrio of El Prado, home to three soccer stadiums and Prado Park. Our tour continues to elegant Carrasco, Punta Gorda and Pocitos, traveling along La Rambla de Montevideo. Get out to stroll a section of this beachside promenade, where you can browse local shops and enjoy lovely coastal views from Punta Gorda before the return drive to your hotel.

After breakfast, we will be picked up at the hotel and brought to a Uruguayan vineyard. We will discover the different challenges that every generation of Uruguayan wine-producers has faced, from cultivating the earliest vineyards at the beginning of the last century until the present. We will also learn about Uruguayan wine from grape to glass. We will enjoy the nature in the vineyards and learn about the way that local artisans make their wines, then sample five select wines, including an award-winning red wine made from Tannat grapes — one of the most prominent grape varieties used in Uruguayan wine. We will also learn about the winemaking process and take tips on appreciating different varietals.

Enjoy a traditional Uruguayan lunch of canelones or stuffed pasta, and eat dessert while at the vineyard. After lunch, we will head back to the hostel for an afternoon and evening that each person will spend at leisure.

Day 15: Montevideo, Uruguay / Buenos Aires, Argentina

After breakfast, you will pack your bags and check out. Our driver will pick us up from the hostel and bring us to the port, where we will board a ferry to take us across the border to Argentina. No visa is needed for Argentina. Once we arrive, we will meet our driver and be taken to our hotel.

Welcome to Argentina! Described as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires is a beautiful city that proudly embraces its nickname and shows off plenty of its own culture! Explore traditional European architecture (cobbled streets lined with rustic outdoor cafes), local antique and artisanal markets that offer plenty of bargain shopping, and the mouthwatering aroma of prized Argentine beef sizzling on an open “parrilla” (barbeque) in the air. But above all, Buenos Aires is known as the home of tango. Be sure to enjoy a traditional dinner-tango show, and explore the colorful San Telmo and Recoleta neighborhoods.

Depart the hotel at 8:30 a.m. with your guide. At your first stop, you'll discover the history of May Square, then enjoy May Avenue and wonder in awe at the oldest residential neighborhood in Buenos Aires: San Telmo. You'll feel the impact that tango has had on the neighborhood of La Boca as you walk along Caminito Street and enjoy the dancers and souvenir shops. You'll also see the mythical Boca Juniors soccer stadium.

Later, you can contemplate the modernization of the city while traveling along Madero Port and its exclusive docks, full of excellent restaurants and large offices. You'll pass through the Retiro neighborhood and move on to see Palermo and its most exclusive residential area before finally arriving at Recoleta. Once there, you'll see the final resting place of Eva Peron, “Evita,” and wander through Recoleta Cemetery where she is to be found.

This morning, we will embark on a city tour of Santiago. You'll get to know the vivid capital of Chile and learn more about its eventful past through the most important sites of Santiago de Chile, admire the Hidalgo castle, and enjoy incredible views of the city from Santa Lucia hill. You'll pass through the Constitution Square and La Moneda, the current seat of the government, then walk to Plaza de Armas, surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the palace of the Royal High Court, the Main Post Office, and other buildings of historical interest. You'll visit San Cristobal Hill (for even more amazing panoramic views) and the Central Market (to see the great variety of Chilean seafood).

We'll also unwind at Viña del Mar, a jet-set resort of yesteryear, visiting the pier and the coastline with some of its beaches.

After breakfast, we will get to know Valparaíso in the company of our local guide, who knows every corner of this beautiful port, with its striking morphology and beautiful architecture. We will visit the most emblematic hills in the area, Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, by using their traditional lifts. We will also stop by the house-museum La Sebastiana, which belonged to the famous Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda. After our visit in Valparaíso, we'll continue to nearby Viña del Mar, known as the "Garden City" because of its large quantity of green areas, flowers, and parks. The city is also known for its beautiful beaches, extensive coastal areas with high buildings, and varied entertainment places.

After breakfast, we will fly to San Pedro de Atacama for our next adventure. We will pack our bags and head to Arturo Merino Benitez Santiago International Airport (1.5 hours). Once we arrive in Calama, our driver will pick us up and drive us to San Pedro de Atacama (1.5 hours).

After breakfast, we will head out to explore the Atacama Salt Flats. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, we’ll visit the luminescent salt flats of Soncor, observe fabulous flocks of brightly colored flamingos in Los Flamencos National Park, and explore the luscious lagoons of Miscanti and Miniques.

In the afternoon, you’ll browse the boutiques of Tocanao for special souvenirs and artisan treasures before heading back to the hostel.

Today, we will go on a city tour of La Paz. With its elevation of 13,120 feet (4,000 meters), the city is set amongst the mountains, with colorful houses dotting the landscape. Visit the Valley of the Moon, a beautiful natural park located right outside of the city. After finishing our scenic hike (roughly 40 minutes), we'll return to the city and take an orange cable car (one of seven in the city) to get a scenic view of the mountains, valleys, houses, and city life.

Just across the bridge from the main part of the city is the San Francisco Church and the Witches' Market. Take a walk to explore these sites, or relax at the hotel for the afternoon. This will be your last evening in Bolivia.

Day 34: La Paz - Copacabana, Bolivia - Puno, Peru

You'll depart La Paz via bus to Copacabana, a charming city on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. According to Andean belief, Titicaca is the original birthplace of the sun. It is also the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable body of water in the world. Clear blue skies and shimmering blue water make Lake Titicaca the long-time home of highland cultures steeped in tradition and mystery.

Upon arrival, you will travel by boat with your guide to the shores of the breathtaking Isla del Sol. You'll tour this magnificent island at a leisurely pace and soak in its many archaeological sites and offerings. More than 80 ruins can be found across the rugged, 27-square-mile (70-square-kilometer) island. These ruins are the remnants of the Inca civilization that lived here in the 15th century AD.

Dine on delicious traditional foods while on the Isla del Sol, and enjoy the wonders of a place untouched by motorized traffic before backtracking to El Alto International Airport near La Paz.

We’ll meet as a group in the hotel lobby with our guide before taking the train to Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu.

Before sunrise, we’ll meet as a group in the hotel lobby with our guide, then line up to take the bus to Machu Picchu. We’ll arrive in time to witness the sun crest over the mountains, bathing them in warm, morning light. Explore the ruins with your guide and take in their colossal majesty before the larger crowds appear. After we’ve taken countless photos, befriended the famous roaming llamas and alpacas, and enjoyed a history lesson about the significance of this ancient city, we’ll head back down to Aguas Calientes as a group by bus.

After breakfast, you will be able to spend the morning on your own exploring the Sacred Valley.

You can browse the artisan shops, stroll down narrow cobblestone lanes, and get to know the local people. Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy the incredible scenery and rich culture around you. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or back at the hotel.

Day 40: Sacred Valley - Cusco, Peru

You'll start off the day meeting your guide in hotel reception for the return trip to Cusco. There’ll be plenty of adventure along the way, and we’ll stop at the lively city of Pisac — famous for its expansive textile market and Inca ruins. The market is an explosion of color and a favorite destination of many travelers; the stalls are overflowing with colorful handicrafts, and it’s the perfect place to pick up a souvenir. The Inca ruins are remarkable too. The fortress sits atop a hill, with agricultural terraces carved into the hillside. It’s believed these ruins were once responsible for guarding the southern entrance to the Sacred Valley.

After lunch, you'll make your way by bus to Cusco.

We’ll arrive at our Cusco hotel mid-afternoon, and you'll have the remainder of the day to spend as you please. Take some time to unwind after our busy day of travel, relaxing at the hotel with a delicious dinner. Before retiring for the evening, please be sure to connect with your guide about the program for the upcoming day.

This morning, we’ll begin our full day in Cusco. You can choose to explore both the cultural and culinary highlights that this ancient city has to offer or take a trip to Rainbow Mountain.

In the afternoon, you'll explore the markets and have dinner in the city before taking an overnight bus to Arequipa.

After checking into the hotel, you can either enjoy a delicious accommodated breakfast or make your way to Arequipa's city center, where there’s a variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

You'll spend the rest of your day exploring on your own, visiting the markets, sightseeing around the Plaza das Armas and Monasterio de Santa Catalina, admiring the views from Yanahuara, and enjoying dinner in the city.

Today, you'll get full day tour of Colca Canyon and Valley — one of the world's deepest river canyons. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore traditional Peruvian villages and catch a glimpse of a vast variety of birds. After the tour, you’ll have the chance to dive into some local hot springs.

Enjoy the rest of your day on your own. Explore the markets and try some authentic Peruvian food for dinner, then board an overnight bus to Nazca.

Arriving early in the morning, you'll have time to explore Nazca, the land that houses the mysterious etchings from the pre-Columbian times. You can even opt to take a flight for a bird's-eye view of the Nazca lines!

Day 45: Nazca - Paracas, Peru

You'll take a morning bus ride to Paracas, a beautiful coastal city known for its beaches. Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel and then make your way to El Chaco beach, where you’ll join a two-hour boat tour of Ballestas Islands. On this tour, you’ll get an up close look of the vast and varied marine life of Peru, including sea lions, dolphins, and Humboldt penguins.

After your tour, you may explore the El Chaco boardwalk and spend the remainder of your afternoon exploring Paracas on your own. There are many sights to see in this area!

You'll embark on a morning bus ride to Lima. Upon arriving in the city, you'll have the rest of your day on your own. We recommend exploring the main square of Lima, the Basílica y Convento de San Francisco, and the Archbishop’s Palace, then enjoying a delicious dinner in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ How should I pack for this trip?

We recommend packing your belongings in a large backpack. You should bring bug spray, a universal charger, a portable charger, copies of your passport and visas, sunglasses, sunscreen, a smaller day bag, a bag for your dirty laundry, comfortable hiking shoes, and breathable clothing (and additional layers), among other things. + How intense is the climb to Machu Picchu?

Visiting Machu Picchu is actually not a strenuous experience. Unless you are doing the Inca Trail, most people choose to take the Train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes, and from Aguas Calientes a Bus to the Entrance of Machu Picchu. From the entrance it is a short 5-10 minute up-hill walk to reach the ruins.

+ Is there a chance I will get altitude sickness?

While most people do not experience altitude Sickness while visiting Peru and other high-altitude South American countries, it is common for some to feel a slight headache or stomach ache on the first day. For those who do experience symptoms, our guides always have oxygen on hand. We also recommend bringing altitude sickness medication with you or purchasing it in country.

+ How do I know if this trip is right for me?

Our Rio to Lima Backpacking Adventure is best suited for healthy travelers with a hearty sense of adventure. You should be comfortable eating unfamiliar food, carrying your belongings in a backpack, and spending several hours per day exploring. Also, please note that this trip is 48 days long, so you'll need to plan carefully around school, work, and your other obligations.
