Itinerary | 9 Days

Day 1: Quito Ecuador Arrive in Quito, for those that arrive early – we will take a day tour to see Mount Cotopaxi.  For those who arrive really early – we will have the opportunity to hike the mountain (3 days needed here).

Day 2: Quito, Ecuador After breakfast we will spending the morning touring the Old Town.  We will visit the magnificent Iglesia de San Francisco, La Compania de Jesus, and La Plaza de la Independencia.  In the afternoon we will move to El Panecillo, where we will have a sweeping view of Old Town and the rest of the city.  The rest of the evening will include visits to famous locations like Fundacion Guayasamin, Plaza Foch, ending at Zazu – the hippest dining spot in Quito.

Day 3: Otavalo, Ecuador Today we will drive deep into the highlands of the Northern Sierra.  We will stop stop at the Andean village of San Clemente for a community visit and lunch, and visit Quitsato Mitad del Mundo where we will have our photos taken with one foot in each of the earth’s hemispheres. In the afternoon we will continue on to the indigenous town of Otavalo and explore its celebrated market. Spend the night at a historical hacienda. 

 Day 4: Otavalo, Ecuador This morning we will explore the artisan markets at Otavalo and shop until our heart’s content.  We will make stops at Peguche, Lago Cuicocha, and take photos in front of the stunning Volcan Imbabura that makes a stunning backdrop to the city of Otavalo.

 Day 5: Amazon Rain Forest Early this morning, begin the drive to Coca, gateway to the Amazon. Continue by motorized canoe to our comfortable lodge and explore the Amazon rain forest with a local guide. Activities include walks, a canopy tower visit, wildlife viewing, and canoeing. In the evening, enjoy dinner and drinks by candlelight, listening to the sounds of our living surroundings before retiring to your cabana. 

 Day 6: Amazon Rain Forest Rise early to witness the early-morning activity in the cloud forest. Enjoy a steaming cup of coffee on the hotel terrace as you watch birds and other species flit among nearby trees. Look for howler monkeys and a variety of brightly colored birds along the way and enjoy a picnic overlooking a garden of medicinal plants. In the evening, take a guided night walk through the surrounding jungle, treading amid bioluminescent fungi and keeping your eyes and ears open for the forest’s nocturnal residents, including frogs, owls, and kinkajous.  Bring your binoculars for a bird-watching walk, where your guide will help you spot some of the more than 400 species that make their home in the forest. Or hike past moss-covered trees, orchids, and coiling vines to the 150-feet-high Copal Waterfall.

Day 7: Banos, Ecuador Travel by boat back to Coca and onwards to Banos.  Today we will have the opportunity to visit local artisan to learn about the local art of weaving, and culinary arts.  We will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves hands on in a cooking class where we will learn about traditional Ecuadorian fare.  In the late afternoon we will continue on to the Banos Hot Springs for on-site hot springs and hiking excursions. We will enjoy leisure time to soak, relax, and enjoy the mountain views.

Day 8: Banos, Ecuador The Avenue of the Volcanoes to Baños is one of the most stunning vistas in all of Ecuador. Today is a free day to opt to go hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking, or visit the hot springs again. 

 Day 9: Guayaquil, Ecuador This morning we will travel onwards to Guayaquil Ecuador.  Here you will have the opportunity to catch your international flight home, or extend your trip 7 days to the Galapagos Islands. 

Galapagos Island Extension: 6 Days

Day 1: Galapagos Islands After a short flight to the Galápagos, we’ll board our explorer boat and begin to explore the Galápagos islands.  Galapagos consists of 13 larger islands and 6 smaller islands, many of which people are allowed to visit.

Day 2 – 5: Galapagos Islands Listed below are some of the islands we may visit during our expeditions:

Isla Fernandina Discover Iguanas as we hike over volcanoes in Punta Expinoza. 

Isla Bartolomé Swim with Galapagos Penguins and walk to the top of Bartolomé's volcanic cone for a stunning view of the surrounding white sand beaches.

Isla Santiago Explore  tide pools and underwater caverns in search of Galápagos sea lions, iguanas, and seals. 

Isla Española Walk among vivid green and red marine iguanas, and observe sea lions up close on a pristine white-sand beach. See Darwin's finches, boobies, and waved albatross on this birder's paradise. 

Isla Santa Cruz Learn about the Darwin Foundation and their giant Galápagos tortoise breeding program; visit the highlands where wild tortoises forage.

Isla Isabela Spot dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and the unusual Mola Mola sunfish as we explore unique caves and hidden lagoons.

Isla Floreana Snorkel among sea lions, or peer into an underwater world) while keeping an eye out for the endangered Floreana Mockingbird. 

Day 6: Galapagos / USA After breakfast, disembark the ship and fly to Guayaquil. The evening is at your leisure to catch your international flight home.
