Arrival Airport: Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

After arriving in Italy’s gorgeous capital city, you’ll transfer to your hostel, then have the freedom to explore on your own — we recommend checking out the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, and many other historical landmarks scattered around the city. Later, you’ll make your way over to Trastevere (Rome’s bohemian quarter) by tram, where you will enjoy a delicious authentic Italian meal.

Hop on a tram or metro using your second 24-hour Rome travel card. You will be heading to the Vatican, the capital of the Roman Catholic Church and home to some of the most famous artwork in the world. Here, you will experience St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican museums. (Keep in mind that your special ticket will allow you to skip the lines!)

You'll spend the afternoon exploring on your own — we suggest checking out either central Rome or Trastevere.

Day 3: Rome and Florence

Hop on Rome’s public transport one more time, arriving at Rome Termini and boarding a train to Florence. The total duration of this train ride should be around an hour and a half to three hours long. Upon arriving in Florence, you will make your way to the city center by foot or bike. The historical city center is small enough to explore on foot, so if you’d like a public transportation card, you’ll need to pay for it from your own pocket. This morning, we recommend checking out Il Duomo di Firenze or the Campanile.

The afternoon is yours to explore on your own. We suggest finding lunch at a local restaurant, then visiting the Piazzale Michelangelo around sunset, when you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city.

Accommodation: Academy Hostel or similar

Day 4: Florence

You might want to visit the San Lorenzo Market, explore the variety of Italian vendors, try authentic Tuscan cuisine, and even pick up some nice souvenirs to bring home. Next, you could go on to explore other treasures located around Florence, such as the city’s architectural marvels and beautiful Renaissance art. Later, you can stroll around the Boboli Gardens and stop by the Marcato Centrale Firenze, another indoor marketplace in the city center.

Day 5: Florence and Pisa
see details >

After breakfast, you will make your way by bike or public transport to the Florence train station. From there you will grab a Italia Rail train to Pisa, Italy. This train ride should take roughly one hour and 20 minutes. Upon arriving at Pisa San Rossore Station, you’ll immediately feel a tug toward the city’s iconic leaning tower — it’s just a short walk from the station, so go ahead and make your way over there!

You'll spend the rest of the day walking around Pisa, exploring Piazza del Duomo, Pisa Baptistery, and Piazza dei Miracoli. Later, you'll make your way back to the train station for your return trip to Florence.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ What vaccinations should I get before my trip?

It's important that you receive the most accurate and up-to-date travel health information before departing for Europe. The only one qualified to provide you with this advice is your family physician or a specialist from a Travel Health clinic. We can provide some general guidance on what websites to check, but these websites are no substitute for a personal consultation with a qualified medical professional.

+ Can you help arrange my Europe travel visas?

If you are an American traveler joining this trip in 2019 or 2020, you will not need a visa. Beginning in 2021, many travelers (including Americans) will need to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver, a new form of travel authorization, to enter the countries in the Schengen Area. Please see here for more information on ETIAS.

In any case, please use VisaHQ to verify the visa requirements for your travel plans.

+ Do your tours include international airfare?

Travelers arrive from all over the world to begin our tours, and it is not possible to include international airfare in our prices. We would be happy to help you arrange flights. Just ask for an air quote when making your booking.

Please see our blog article and video to learn more about packing for Europe.
