Days 1 & 2: Addis Ababa

We’ll arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, and spend the day getting acquainted with the group. The next morning, we’ll attend an orientation before heading out on a guided tour. Destinations include the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Entoto Mountain, and the National Museum of Ethiopia—home to Lucy, the oldest partial skeleton ever found. We’ll learn about the country’s culture and traditions while visiting the National Palace, meeting local tribes, and taking in the natural wonders of the land. Day 3: Bahir Dar

Today we’ll journey north to the bustling city of Bahir Dar. We’ll take a boat trip on the vast Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Learn about the region’s history while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding nature, wildlife, and monasteries, including the colorful Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam. The Blue Nile Falls—also known as Tis Issat, or “smoking water”—are among Africa’s most breathtaking scenes and are sure to be a scene you’ll never forget! After a nonstop day of adventure, head back to the hotel to recharge for tomorrow. Accommodation: Blue Nile Resort

Days 4-5: Gondar/Bonga/Jimma Region

Venture through beautiful villages in the desolate plateau of Ethiopia, one of the country’s most cultured regions. Gondar, known as the “Camelot of Africa,” is famous for its many regal castle remains. We’ll visit Fasilida’s Pool, Ras Gimb, and the Debre Berhan Selassie Church, where we’ll find the most famous, intricately designed ceiling in all of Ethiopia. We’ll also travel through the lush greenery of Bonga and bustling markets of Jimma. Accommodation: Goha Hotel or similar

Day 6-7: Axum

After breakfast, travel to Aksum—one of Ethiopia’s oldest and holiest cities, thought to be the home of the Queen of Sheba. There’s a long list of can’t-miss sites, so prepare yourself for a jam-packed day of exploration! We’ll visit the famous obelisks, the Archeological Museum of Aksum, Queen of Sheba’s Bath, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, which holds the Ark of the Covenant. Day 8-9, Lalibela An early morning flight will take us to Lalibela, famous for its legendary rock-hewn churches. We’ll head to the northwest churches first, touring Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, and Bet Meskel, to name a few. Despite visiting so many seemingly similar locations, each church is unique with something new to see at every turn! The highlight of the day is sure to be the famous Bet Giyorgis, constructed in honor of Saint George, the patron saint of Ethiopia. Gaze upon the stunning, entrenched building bathed in pale pink and golden yellow. Accommodation: Tukul Village Hotel

Day 10, Mekele / Addis Ababa The time has come to end our unforgettable Ethiopian trip. We’ll head back to Addis Ababa, stopping at several small crater lakes, exploring bustling markets, and gathering for a traditional farewell dinner along the way. If you’re not ready to fly home just yet, join our 4-day extension trip to Mekele and Erta Ale Volcano. Optional 4 Day Extension to Mekele and Etra Ale Volcano From Addis Ababa, we’ll travel to Mekele by donkey before visiting a nearby secluded village, home to one of Ethiopia’s most indigenous tribes. After getting to know the people and their culture, we’ll drive ~6 hours to the infamous Erta Ale Volcano, roaming through diverse villages, glistening sand, voyaging camel trains, and igneous rocks. We’ll spend a full day on the ridge of the caldera, exploring the area, photographing lava pools, and sleeping under the stars before venturing back to Addis Ababa. Accommodation: basic accommodations in local villages
