What to Pack for a Trip to Egypt and Jordan

So, you’ve decided to travel to Egypt and Jordan. Such a good choice, by the way! You’ve got your to-do list before you embark on your next journey: book the tickets, sort out any travel documents you need, and pack your suitcase. But, what should you pack? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! This guide will help you decide what you definitely should bring on an expedition through Egypt and Jordan, and what you should leave at home!

CLOTHING

Comfortable Pair of Walking Shoes - When you’re on vacation, you always want to look nice. But in the case of footwear, I would suggest choosing function over fashion. Egypt and Jordan are filled with amazing markets, historic sites, museums, and so much more. It’s super important to have a good pair of walking shoes that won’t give you blisters, and can last the day!

Swimsuit - Egypt and Jordan respectively are both conservative when compared to Western countries. While both places have lots of tourists and are aware of Western values, showing a sense of modesty is considered good manners when travelling here. It’s suggested that women should wear a one-piece swimsuit, and both men and women should wear a shirt over their swimsuit.

Scarf and Scarf Pin - Though this is not necessary for when travelling in Jordan (unless visiting religious sites), it is suggested that women should cover up with a scarf when in Egypt. Local people will be incredibly appreciative that you put the effort in to respect their customs. You do not need to do a ‘hijab-style’ wrap, you only need to cover your hair.

Loose-fitting Clothing - In both countries, it’s a good idea to wear breathable, loose-fitting clothing in order to combat the heat. It’s also customary to wear clothing that covers the knees and shoulders for both men and women. Bringing a longer skirt and some long-sleeved blouses is also suggested for women.

TECHNOLOGY

Camera and Memory Card - Whether you’re a professional photographer bringing all your gear, or simply snapping some photos with your phone, Jordan and Egypt are filled with stunning places where you’ll surely get the perfect picture ( click here for some of the most photogenic, historic spots in Jordan)! If you’re using a camera, don’t forget a memory card!

Portable Battery Pack - Speaking of capturing photos, you wouldn’t want your phone to die while out and about in these countries, or you might miss out on some amazing photo opportunities. It’s also good to have maps working on our phone, so having a portable battery pack will definitely come in handy!

Adapter - Egypt and Jordan both use 220 V Type C and Type F outlets. This is similar to most of Europe. Jordan will also sometimes have Type G plugs, which are common in the UK. Carry a universal outlet adapter with you, preferably one with some USB plugs.

OTHER ESSENTIALS

Journal - Whenever I am travelling, I always like to bring a journal with me! At the end of a busy day, it’s nice to sit back, relay your day, and reflect on it. As a bonus, once you’re back home, it’s so much fun to look back at your journal entries and relive all the amazing memories you made!

Baby Wipes - Yes, you read that right. Although it may seem kind of strange, baby wipes are my travel secret! They’re super gentle on your skin, but they get the job done. They can clean up any messes, wipe away dirt, and if you’re in a pinch, they can work as tissues or toilet paper. I always keep a small pack in my bag.

Sunscreen - Even if you don’t normally burn, when you’re in Egypt and Jordan, you shouldn’t go outside without putting SPF on. It’ll protect your skin from the bright sun, and your future self will thank you ( click here for a list of the best chemical-free sunscreens)!

Sunglasses - Keeping with the sun theme, your eyes need just as much protection as your skin! Egypt and Jordan each get over 300 days of sunshine every year. Having a good-quality pair of sunglasses will prevent any damage to your eyes. When looking for a pair of sunglasses, it’s recommended to purchase a pair that’s polarized.

Deodorant - When in hot countries such as Jordan and Egypt, you’re going to sweat. A lot. Make sure you don’t forget to bring some deodorant with you. It’s best not to wear antiperspirant though because it doesn’t allow your skin to breathe as easily as regular deodorant.

Reusable Tote Bag - With all the amazing markets, you’re bound to find some cool pieces. Ditch the plastic, and make use of a reusable tote bag! It will also come in handy if you decide to take a trip to the beach for a day. They hardly take up any space in your suitcase, and they’re super helpful!

Reusable Water Bottle with Filter - The tap water in both Jordan and Egypt is relatively safe to drink. However, I would still recommend bringing a reusable water bottle with a filter. Egypt’s water is filtered with chlorine, which can upset the stomach if you’re not used to it. A personal filter will keep your water clean, and reduce your amount of single-use plastics!

That’s it! You’re all packed and ready to head out on the adventure of a lifetime to Egypt and Jordan! With these packing essentials, you’ll be able to handle anything and have the most amazing trip.
