The glorious regions of the Galapagos archipelago are captivating with their natural charm and timeless elements. This beatific cluster of islands possess a diverse array of unique wildlife and serene landscape that can only leave you enchanted. Nestled on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, just over 600 miles from the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are famous for the distinct species that varies between islands. 1830’s explorer Charles Darwin described numerous species of birds that find their home within the paradisaical island chain, and fantasy-size tortoises so large the explorers could ride on their backs. Today the island’s natural gems are preserved as national parks and make the fantastical creatures accessible to curious visitors. Consisting of over 11 islands here are a few of our favorite Galapagos island destinations!
SANTA CRUZ ISLAND
There are a variety of activities to enjoy while breathing in the oceanic breeze of Santa Cruz Island. You might find yourself mountain biking along one of the island trails, riding horseback along the cerulean coast, venturing to the majestic and secluded Tortuga Bay, snorkeling between the rock formations of Las Gretas or strolling along the quaint white stucco hotels and shops that are exclusive to the island. You can also get a bite to eat at one of the authentic South American restaurants located in Puerto Arroyo. Try their specialty seafood dishes or chicken platter garnished with rice or cooked garden vegetables. Or enjoy a delicious treat of ice cream at the Galapagos deli! This Island destination is unique for its lush verdure and diverse animal life. It is home to the giant tortoise conservatory making the fairytale-size tortoises accessible for visitors to watch and take pictures of. It will definitely be an experience to remember!
NORTH SEYMOUR ISLAND
A unique natural beauty, North Seymour is a destination to behold with its palate of earthy tones. It has one of the largest colonies of frigate birds in the Galapagos, as well as the Palo Santo, a wild prickly pear-tree that grows abundantly across the scenic landscape. The Palo Santo wood is said to encourage feelings of love, creativity, and good fortune. The Island is famous for its dancing blue-footed boobies which show off their stylish blue feet to their potential mates in a courtship dance--one of the many fun attractions that visitors will remember. Besides the incredible bird show, North Seymour offers sea lions lounging on the rocky shores, as well as snorkeling with green sea turtles and rays just off the coast. Additionally, you can leisurely venture on trails that take you along the vast colorful foliage of the island.
BARTOLOME ISLAND
One of the “younger” Islands in the Archipelago, Bartolome is the nesting site for Galapagos penguins and green turtles! This destination provides some of the best opportunities to snorkel with green turtles, penguins, sea lions, and other colorful tropical fish. You may find yourself breathless visiting this exotic island, as the volcanic landscape offers an earthy appeal for visitors to walk along the crystal waters of the isthmus. You can also extend your island experience as you view the extinct crater volcano or journey to the towering pinnacle rock formation that emerges from the island like a jagged shark tooth.
SANTA FE ISLAND
You will not be disappointed by the variety of graceful avian creatures here! This beautiful island is home to majestic birds such as swallowed tail gulls, shear-water petrels and Galapagos finches. Galapagos hawks are also frequently seen along the lazuline coastline. Being one of the oldest islands of the archipelago, its rocky crevices are covered in leafy green foliage and opuntia forests where you may see land iguanas among other lizards. Further along the shore, you can find sea lions basking and sometimes posing for photos!
FERNANDINA ISLAND
One of the largest island destinations in the Galapagos, Fernandina Island sparks intrigue with its windswept gorgeous black mountains formed by cooled lava flows. Channel your inner Indiana-Jones and venture to the heart of the island to view its active shield volcano, la Cumbre. You may view the lava flows safely from the Espinosa viewing point which is also near a flightless cormorant nesting ground. Clusters of lava cactus are found growing on the recently cooled lava and can inspire visitors as the hardy tube-like vegetation strive to grow in these rugged conditions. Visitors can also view the marine iguanas which perch regally on the rocky shores. Or for an extra special treat take a yacht to the coast of the island where you can dive with sea horses, penguins, and even sharks!
