1. The Valley of Butterflies, Rhodes
On the island of Rhodes, The Butterfly Valley is a shaded green valley with a small river, beautiful waterfalls, and of course - butterflies. At the end of the wet season every year–around late May–hundreds and thousands of butterflies light up the garden. They are attracted to the Oriental Sweetgum trees that cover the entire landscape. Enjoy the time to connect with nature as you walk towards the monastery at the top. The more you look, the more butterflies you will see.
2. Navagio Beach, Zakynthos
Despite being one of the most famous beaches in Greece, locals claim that the mornings are quite peaceful on Navagio. Arrive early to enjoy the beache’s pristine sand, clear blue water and fascinating shipwreck. It is said that this ship actually created the beach. Decades ago, a naval convoy got into some trouble when being chased by Greek authorities. After crashing, sand has slowly accumulated around the shipwreck, forming the beach that we see today. Navagio is inclosed with tall cliffs giving it a very remote, inaccessible feel; that is not something you want to share with other vacationers.
3. Melissani Cave, Kefalonia
On the outside Melissani Cave it looks just like your typical cave, but once you turn the corner you will be blown away. In late spring/early summer, this impressive natural wonder is known by the locals to be lit up all day long. Not only will this allow you to escape from the world, it is also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see when the sun hits it in just the right way.
4. Ancient Messene, Peloponnese
Often overlooked by tourists visiting Olympia, Corinth and Mycenae, Ancient Messene reveals many stories and secrets about the vast history that Greece holds. Located on the giant peninsula of the Peloponnese, Ancient Messene is untouched by later settlements ensuring an outstanding preservation. This site is full of surprises. Excavation has been occurring for the past 100 years, yet locals claim that only one third of the total size has been discovered so far! When planning your next trip to Greece, make sure to schedule some time to get lost in history in this off-the-radar destination.
5. Zagoria, Epirus
Connected with traditional Greek villages, mountain slopes, and stone-arched bridges, Zagoria is definitely a way to escape the “pollution” of tourists, live with the locals, and truly experience Greek culture. Zagoria is popular among locals to experience relaxation, tranquility, adventure, and excitement. The region is untouched by mass tourism therefore making it the perfect place to escape. The lack of tourism means finding a hotel can be a little tricky. So when planning your trip to Zagoria, live as locals do and stay in quaint old houses (restored) guesthouses and B&Bs!
6. Chora, Folegandros
With only around 700 inhabitants, Folegandros is popular among local Athenians who vacation to escape the business of the bigger islands. When planning your trip, it is highly recommended to include the authentic greek village of Chora as it is the perfect example of the authentic greek way. The relaxed vibe, whitewashed walls, colorful fishing boats, and the scent of bougainvillea will make your experience worthwhile. An ancient cobbled street in Pounta Square begins a zig-zag path that winds up the mountain. At the top, not only will you be treated to breathtaking views, but you can take a minute to unwind at the traditional greek church of Panagia.
7. Olympos, Karpathos
Karpathos beaches may be one of the biggest hidden gems in Greece. There is so much to experience and explore. Enjoy enchanting sunsets, windmills on the cliffs, and amazing local food. If you are looking for somewhere to dream, rediscover, and escape, this is your place. When planning your trip make sure to schedule some time in the village of Olympos. Built in 900 AD, the village overlooks the island as its main purpose was to look for pirates. Karpathos allows you to get the beachy, authentic greek feel, without having to fight with other tourists to see the view.
8. The Blue Cave, Kastellorizo
At only 2 miles wide, Kastellorizo has only one village. As one of the most remote islands in Greece, Kastellorizo has a hushed and still vibe, making it the perfect environment to recharge. Ironically, one of the biggest caves in all of Greece is located here - the Blue Cave. Although quite a tourist attraction, locals suggest staying on the island overnight and visiting in the early morning/early afternoon. This will avoid the rush of tourists who come in on boats at around noon. The colorful island Kastellorizo is one of Greece’s most underappreciated and best kept secrets.
9. Trichonida Lake, Aetolia-Acarnania
Despite being the largest lake in the country, tourists still do not seem to be aware that this beautiful lake exists. Trichonida fits perfectly in between Arakymthos and Panaitoliko - two enormous, uninhabited mountains. This peaceful area is rich in vegetation, and home to more than 140 different species of birds. If you want to stray away from the typical tourist spots and enjoy Greece’s natural landscapes, then definitely include Trichonida Lake when planning your next trip.
10. Kleftiko, Milos
Milos’ magical landscape is perhaps one of the dreamiest spots in all of Greece. Consecutive bays of complex volcanic rock fall into the Mediterranean Sea creating a very unique landscape. It is known by locals to be the best spot for snorkeling as the clear blue water is pretty much transparent. When you are planning your trip, keep in mind that Kleftiko can only be reached by boat - almost guaranteeing that you will explore uninterrupted by other tourists.
