Consisting of more than 170 South Pacific islands, Tonga is one of the most beautiful, and perhaps underrated destinations in the world. With pristine white beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush tropical rainforests, Tonga will be sure to take your breath away. As it covers such a wide number of islands, it can be difficult to know where to go first. Here is a list of 5 must-see destinations on the so-called “friendly islands”:

1. Tongatapu, Nuku’alofa

As the largest, main island in Tonga, Tongatapu is on the top of our list. The island's capital, Nuku’alofa, welcomes thousands of tourists per year and therefore is no stranger to being a host. As it is also Tonga’s main port, there is a vast history of welcoming sailors from all over the world. Get lost in the hustle and bustle of the seaside city of Nuku’alofa - be sure to get a taste of the famous Tongan pineapple.

2. Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes

Located on the main island of Tongatapu, the Mapu’a a Vaea are one of the world’s most interesting and beautiful treasures. As Tonga is home to a large amount of tectonic activity, we can see examples of this in the ocean. These exciting natural channels allow water to surge back and forth and forcefully blow it up in the air and create a plume-like effect.

3. Vava’u

As an island group consisting of over 50 islands, the experiences in Vava’u are endless. Its remote islands are quite popular with tourists, but the islands are so spaced out you would hardly even know. As one of the most important tourism sites in Tonga, Vava’u is well accustomed to visitors and non-locals. The locals are super friendly as they are used to welcoming sailing boats from all over the world. Dive into the crystal-clear waters, explore underwater caves, and maybe even spot some humpback whales.
