ITINERARY | 9 days:
Day 1: Today we will arrive in Cusco where we will acclimatize to the altitude by having an introduction lesson to Peru and some of the photographic skills we will be honing on this journey. He will spend the afternoon on a walking tour of Historic Cusco and catch golden hour by photographing the ancient cobblestone streets of the Old City’s passageways and bustling squares. In the evening we will have a traditional welcome dinner as we learn about Peruvian culture & cuisine. Accommodation: Casa Elena
Day 2: This morning, enjoy a horseback riding adventure in the sweeping Andean landscape that cradles Cusco, learning about the surrounding ruins and Incan empire that used to inhabit the land. After a relaxing lunch, we’ll either take our private bus or enjoy the iconic train journey to Aguas Calientes, passing dramatic canyons and spectacular rivers until we arrive at the town at the base of Machu Picchu. We’ll spend the evening reviewing and critiquing photos at our hotel and preparing for the next day’s photographic experience. Accommodation: Hostal La Payacha
Day 3: Long before sunrise, we’ll wake up to take bus up to Machu Picchu in order to arrive at the ruins to witness the sun crest over the mountains and as this Unesco World Heritage Site becomes bathed in light and color. This is the perfect time to see the ruins and enjoy their colossal majesty before the hordes of tour groups arrive. After we’ve taken our photos, befriended Machu Picchu’s famous roaming alpacas, and have had a history lesson about the significance of this ancient city, we’ll head back down to Aguas Calientes. After a hearty late breakfast and probably much-needed nap, we’ll spend the afternoon soaking in the city’s famous natural hot springs before boarding our train back to Ollantaytambo. Accommodation: Hostal La Payacha
Day 4: Today we will explore Ollantaytambo, a colorful village famously known as the “Living city of the Incas.” Here, locals still live in the ancient houses built by the Incas over 500 years ago; the contrast of ancient and modern life will be a prominent and key sight to photograph as we explore its sophisticated streets, colossal fortress, and lively markets that resemble how the Incan Empire may have appeared in those very lanes where we’ll walk. In the afternoon, we’ll take a sunset hike to a viewpoint to photograph the glaciers that spill into the valley, dotted with villages and grazing llamas, or perhaps spend the evening playing soccer in the village with our new friends. We will also visit the famous textile markets of Pisac. In the evening we will return to Cusco where we will enjoy dinner before returning to our hotel. Accommodation: Casa Elena
Day 5: It’s time for us to head into the spectacular Andes, with its glacier-cracked spine piercing the length of Peru. On our bus, we’ll head high into the mountains, stopping to have a walking tour of Cuyuni village; a remote community of only 200 residents. We’ll be introduced to how they live, and be able to spend time with the villagers to gain perspective on how they live their remote lives in a rapidly changing world. We’ll have a lesson on Quechua culture and will also have an in-depth and rare opportunity to photograph an isolated way of life that’s unique to only this small corner of the world. Here we’ll meet up with our professional trekking guide, who will take us on our trek and homestay experience for the next two nights. Accommodation: Pacchanta Homestay
Day 6: This morning we will wake up early and begin our trek to the famous Azulcocha, a spectacular alpine lake at the basin of Ausangate, one of the most magnificent peaks in this region of the Andes. Spend the evening photographing the landscapes, village, and spending time with our host families in the village of Pacchanta. After long days of hiking, we’ll welcome this day as we drive from the high altitude mountains down to the Amazon basin, where we’ll arrive at the Amazonian city of Puerto Maldonado. Accommodation: Tambo Jungle Lodge
Day 7: This morning a canoe ride will take us deep into our jungle oasis. Here we’ll take jungle hikes and boat trips deep into the canals of Condenado, an area famously rich with wildlife. We’ll catch the sunset from a high jungle platform, then spend the night reviewing photos and going over lessons on how to capture wildlife in tough environments, such as the rainforest. Accommodation: Tambo Jungle Lodge
Day 8: Today we will begin early with an early start to spot and photograph the wildlife that abounds in the rainforest, such as caiman, toucans, butterflies, howler monkeys, and a spectacular array of birdlife. We’ll also doing a night walk (as 50% of the animals in the Amazon are nocturnal), allowing ourselves to be completely enveloped in the magnificence of the rainforest at dusk. Accommodation: Tambo Jungle Lodge
Day 9: From our lodge, we’ll make our way back to Puerto Maldonado where we’ll catch our plane back to the United States.
