Many people are traveling this fall and winter to be with family for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve. Time spent with family is far too valuable to be stressing about travel plans. You don’t want to catch yourself on the less prepared side of things… check out these tips and tricks to ensure that your family time is unforgettable and that your holiday season goes smoothly.
1. Not following the COVID guidelines
The rate of infected people to the coronavirus is increasing on a daily basis. It is important to practice social distrancing guidelines (staying at least 6 feet apart from others) as well as mask safety. The chances of catching the virus decrease significantly when a facial covering is worn. Any child 2 years of age or younger (or anyone with a breathing problem) is not required to wear a mask. Avoid frequently touched surfaces in public and plan ahead to be sure that your trip destination is not a hot spot for COVID. Take extra caution around people that are at risk including: the elderly, pregnant women, anyone with a history of breathing problems, cancer patients, etc.
2. Not planning ahead of time
Make sure to arrange your transportation, accommodations, and budget ahead of time. Without careful planning before your trip, unforeseen problems may arise. Closer to the holiday season, flights may be unavailable or out of your price range so it’s important to book them early to be on the one you want! Make sure to confirm reservations for accommodations and vehicles ensuring that your journey is a safe one. Create a packing list to bring everything you need. Planning ahead of time will help keep you relaxed and happy during your trip!
3. Overpacking
Be sure to pack only the essentials with a few other items in case of an emergency. A common thought while packing is “well, what if [hypothetical situation] happens?” leading to another unnecessary item getting tossed in the suitcase. Pack for emergency situations (extra medication, underwear, feminine hygiene products) without going overboard. This helps to decrease prices too when flying on airplanes, as most airlines charge extra for checked luggage.
4. Short layovers
Flights are never consistent, sometimes they can arrive earlier than expected, sometimes later. Planes can take off later due to weather, de-icing the wings, a later arrival from an earlier flight, etc. Be sure to leave yourself enough room in between flights to walk without haste to your next departure gate. If you’ve traveling to an airport you haven’t been to before, it’s easy to become disoriented and not know where to go.
5. Not taking into account the weather
Looking at the weather forecast for your travel destination before arriving will help you pack the right type of clothing and know what to expect while you are on vacation! If you are traveling somewhere warmer, then embrace the sunshine and don’t pack your winter clothes. If you are traveling somewhere colder, bundle up and bring extra lotion in case your skin dries out. Fun memories can be made in the pouring rain, snow, or sunshine!
6. Not embracing spontaneity
Not all trips go as planned… with that being said, there are still ways to have fun no matter the circumstances. Flexibility is key when traveling during the holidays. Have patience, treat others with kindness, and enjoy every step of the way to create long-lasting happy memories with your family.
7. Not protecting valuables
Some areas/countries/regions are safer than others. Look up the safety level of wherever you are traveling and don’t leave your valuables unattended. Have a separate, secure pouch for storing important things. Travel with at least a little cash on you in case of a mugging.
8. Being culturally insensitive
Get to know the culture before arriving at your destination, especially if you are traveling out of the country! This can help to avoid etiquette mistakes and help to make the trip a special experience. Places are able to be even more appreciated once the traveler understands its history and culture. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to find out more about your vacation spot!
9. Not informing your bank of your travel plans
Banks will shut down your cards if they detect any unusual activity! It’s so important to reach out to your bank before your trip so they know that it’s you using your cards and not a scammer. This is especially important when traveling outside of the country. All it takes is one quick call and you’re good to go!
10. Spending too much time on your phone
Everyone wants a good picture to post on Instagram… but it is worth it if you’re looking at your phone screen more than the sights around you or your family members? Social media will always be there for you to check on when you get home. Family time is precious and only comes around every once in a while. Hit “do not disturb” on your phone and soak up all of the positive vibes of enjoying the holidays in a new place.
