Beyond the Algarve beaches and city break Lisbon or Porto, Portugal remains a beautiful easily-covered mystery. The Costa Vicentina's deserted golden shores contrast with the ravishing seaside towns of the Costa da Prata.  The National parks encompass the soaring peaks of the Serra da Estrela, the history-laden Sintra hills and the rural beguilements of Alentejo. Cycle paths and walking trails link distinctive country inns (quintas). Portugal's interior remains charmingly unspoilt yet accessible by improved transport links. Comfortable trains link Lisbon and Porto to inland gems like Evora, Coimbra and Guimaraes.

ITINERARY | 8 DAYS

Day 1: Arriving in Porto, we will take the time to adjust to the time change by having an introductory lesson of Portugal.  We will check into our hotel and be on our way to explore some parts of the city and eat a traditional Portuguese meal for our welcome dinner.  Accommodation: Porto City Hotel

Day 2: After a delicious breakfast buffet, we’ll set out to explore Porto. Porto’s multicolored old quarter tumbles to the Douro riverfront where historic warehouses sell wine from the surrounding Minho region as well as the eponymous port. Porto’s hard-working reputation belies an atmospheric beauty and cultural clout from outstanding modern architecture alongside fine museums.  Today you will have a guided tour of Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis.  Porto's best art museum presents a stellar collection ranging from Neolithic carvings to Portugal’s take on modernism, all housed in the formidable Palácio das Carrancas. After the museum, we will spend the evening at Mercado do Bolhão – you will have the chance to purchase or look at all of the fresh produce and different meats and fish that they sell every day in this famous market. Accommodation: Porto City Hotel

Day 3:  Spend the morning walking around Porto and enjoying all that the city has to offer.  In the afternon, we will have the opportunity to visit some of the most famous Douro Wine vineyards and cellars in the region - even tasting the wines for ourselves.  In the evening have free time to explore the markets or even watch an FC Porto futbol game (if available during our time here) before we depart for the capital city of Lisbon in the morning.  Accommodation: Porto City Hotel

Day 4: Today we will be up early to prepare for our first adventure in Lisbon.  Portugal's capital is one of Europe's loveliest cities, draping contrasting neighborhoods across historic hills by the wide Tagus estuary. We will set out to Alfama - Alfama is a medieval mélange of ramshackle cobbled streets enlivened by fado bars and outdoor markets – Travelers come in droves to bear witness to the neighborhood's famed charm (and some street art), and say this is the best place to get to know Lisbon. We will end our evening with a nice dinner in the heart of Lisbon, and a famous Casa De Fado (traditional Portuguese music house). Accommodation: Lisbon City Hotel

Day 5: Spend our last day in Lisbon touring the different museums and historical buildings that the city has to offer.  We will start in Bairro Algo – the heart of the artisan scene in Lisbon where shops, restaurants, and mozaic walkways abound.  We will continue onwards to Baixa and Chiado, learning about the local Portuguese Culture before visiting the oldest castle in Lisbon. In the afternoon we will travel onward to Sintra - where the famous Portuguese Palaces are built admist the hills.  Enjoy a delicious Pasteis de Nata as we stop in Belem on the way home.  Have the evening to enjoy your last day in beautiful Lisbon before we travel onwards to the Algarve.  Accommodation: Lisbon City Hotel

Day 6: After a delicious buffet breakfast at your hotel  we will have an adventurous (or relaxing if you choose) day in the water. Take private surf lessons in Porto de Mos and embark on a Kayaking tour of Ponte de Piedade. Enjoy the afternoon to relax at your leisure and enjoy the beautiful beaches and delicious food stalls that the Algarve is known for.   In the evening enjoy another traditional Portuguese dinner at the hotel.  Accommodation: Algarve Hotel

Day 7: Today we we will spend our last day in the Algarve with a tour around their city center in the morning, a visit to the beach in the afternoon, and an incredible dolphin watching boat cruise along the coast in the evening.  Enjoy a farewell dinner before you head home the following day.  Accommodation: Algarve Hotel

Day 8: Today we say goodbye to Portugal as we board our flights from the local airport to our home destinations.
